How the world clock works

Each clock reads the official IANA time zone rules for its city, so daylight saving time starts and ends on the right day without any manual adjustment. Your board and favorites are stored only in this browser.

The coloured badge shows the city’s current offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Offsets change during daylight saving time — London is UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer — which is why a fixed list of offsets quickly becomes wrong.

Time zone abbreviations

Abbreviations such as EST or CET name a fixed offset, while the places that use them often switch to a summer time (EDT, CEST). Each page below shows the clock people usually mean and explains the difference:

• GMT — Greenwich Mean Time
• EST/EDT — US Eastern Time
• CST/CDT — US Central Time
• PST/PDT — US Pacific Time
• CET/CEST — Central European Time
