India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York while the US is on standard time (EST), and 9 hours 30 minutes ahead while the US is on daylight time (EDT). India never changes its clocks, so the gap only moves when the US does.
On 15 January 2027, India Standard Time (IST) is 10 h 30 min ahead of Eastern Time (ET); on 15 July 2027, the difference is 9 h 30 min.
What the abbreviations mean
Eastern Time (ET)
Eastern Time covers the US East Coast (New York, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia) and Ontario and Quebec in Canada. EST (UTC−5) is the standard-time name; during daylight saving time the region uses EDT (UTC−4).
India Standard Time (IST)
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 throughout the year. India uses a single time zone nationwide and does not observe daylight saving time.
- “IST” is ambiguous: it can also mean Irish Standard Time (UTC+1, Ireland’s summer time) or Israel Standard Time (UTC+2). Here, IST always means India Standard Time (Asia/Kolkata, UTC+5:30).
- Because of the half-hour offset, Indian times converted from round US hours always end in :30.
- Evening calls in New York often land on the next calendar day in India — watch the day indicator in the results.
