Why UTC+8 near the equator?

Geographically Singapore is closer to UTC+7, and until 1981 it used UTC+7:30. On 1 January 1982 Singapore and Malaysia moved to UTC+8 to align with the main financial centres of East Asia. One result: the sun rises around 7:00 and sets around 19:00 almost all year.

A hub between time zones

Singapore’s working day overlaps with Tokyo and Sydney in the morning and with Dubai and Europe in the afternoon. SGX securities trading runs from 9:00 to 17:00 with a midday break.
