Time in Mumbai
India

Mumbai runs on India Standard Time (IST), five and a half hours ahead of UTC, like the rest of India. There is no daylight saving time, so Mumbai’s clock never changes — only the gap to Europe and North America moves when those regions change theirs.

Markets and office hours

Mumbai is India’s financial capital. The BSE and the National Stock Exchange trade from 9:15 to 15:30 IST, Monday to Friday, which overlaps with the London morning but closes before New York opens.

Offices typically work from about 9:30 or 10:00 to 18:00 or later, and many firms also work on Saturdays.

From Bombay Time to IST

Until 1955 the city kept its own ‘Bombay Time’, about 39 minutes behind today’s IST, long after the rest of the country had adopted the national standard.

Being on India’s west coast, Mumbai sees sunrise and sunset noticeably later than Kolkata — up to about an hour — even though both cities share the same clock.
