Eastern Time now
EST · EDT · New York

Eastern Time is the clock of the US East Coast — New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta and Miami. It only runs on Eastern Standard Time (EST) in winter; from March to November it switches to Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The big clock above always shows the current New York time with the abbreviation that applies today.

EST versus EDT

EST is UTC−5 and EDT is UTC−4. Writing “EST” in July is technically wrong — the East Coast is on EDT then — which is why many companies simply write “ET” (Eastern Time) all year.

If you need to schedule something precisely, use the city (New York) or the IANA zone America/New_York rather than the abbreviation. The converter below does that automatically.

Who uses Eastern Time?

Most of the US East Coast — New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Miami — plus Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Panama, Jamaica and the Mexican state of Quintana Roo stay on UTC−5 all year, so in summer they are one hour behind New York.

Daylight saving time

The US East Coast moves from EST to EDT at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November.

Frequently asked questions

What time is it in EST right now?

The main clock shows the current Eastern Time in New York and whether EST or EDT is in effect. The fixed EST clock shows UTC−5 exactly.

Is it EST or EDT now?

EDT (UTC−4) applies from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November; EST (UTC−5) applies the rest of the year. The label next to the clock shows today’s abbreviation.

How many hours is EST from UTC?

EST is 5 hours behind UTC. During daylight saving time the East Coast uses EDT, which is 4 hours behind UTC.

What is the difference between EST and PST?

Eastern Time is 3 hours ahead of Pacific Time almost all year, because both regions change their clocks on the same dates.
